A Brief History of Dairy Queen
Dairy Queen opened its first store on June 22, 1940, in Joliet, Illinois. Founders John McCullough and his son Alex developed the soft serve formula two years earlier and tested it at a friend’s shop. On the very first day, they served over 1,600 portions in two hours.
By 1955, there were over 2,600 DQ locations across North America. The Blizzard launched in 1985 and sold 175 million units in its first year alone. Dairy Queen acquired Orange Julius in 1987 and was purchased by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in 1998. Today, DQ generates approximately $6.4 billion in worldwide sales every year.
One thing most people do not know: DQ soft serve is not technically ice cream by FDA standards. Ice cream requires at least 10% milkfat. DQ soft serve contains around 5% milkfat, which is what gives it that lighter, smoother texture. It is served at precisely 18 degrees Fahrenheit on every single order.
